Corporate Social Responsibility

Stolt-Nielsen S.A. operates its businesses in a socially responsible manner, to ensure the safety of people and the environment.  Our commitment to this objective is underscored by the daily actions of our employees and their dedication to the numerous programmes and practices we have implemented.  SNSA consistently aims to maintain the highest standards of safety and quality in all that we do worldwide.

Stolt-Nielsen S.A. is proud of its continuing and ongoing efforts to manage its businesses responsibly.

At Stolt Tankers & Terminals, we are now beginning the third year of our Excellence in Safety programme.  Developed with Det Norske Veritas, the international foundation focused on safeguarding life, property and the environment, the programme is designed to ensure that Stolt Tankers’ shipboard safety management, risk assessment and crew training are state of the art.  A new programme element focuses specifically on shore staff, to reinforce the importance of safety for all those involved in the ship-management process.

Shipowning’s quality management system is currently certified by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 9001), and the company expects to receive ISO 14001 certification for environmental performance this year.

Stolt Tankers also has implemented benchmarking tools from INTERTANKO (International Association of Independent Tank Owners), which allow participants to score and compare their safety performance against other tanker companies and competitors.

As a result of these and other initiatives, Stolt Tankers has recorded a significant decrease in incidents in recent years and its safety performance, based on its benchmarking scores, is among the best in the industry.

Stolthaven Terminals has long been a recognised leader in safety and environmental protection.  Based on best practices developed at Stolthaven Houston, the division has created a blueprint for terminal development that it applies worldwide.  In 2008, our Houston and New Orleans Terminals received for the second year in a row the Safety Excellence Award, presented by the Independent Liquid Terminals Association (ILTA), and on August 18, 2008, Stolthaven Houston completed one full year without an OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S.) recordable injury or lost-time accident.

At Stolt Tank Containers, our global SSHE&Q (Security, Safety, Health, Environment & Quality) management system ensures full compliance with local, national, international and industry requirements, regulations and certifications.  STC is certified by the world’s leading industry agencies focused on standards and assessment, including the International Organization for Standardization and the Chemical Distribution Institute (CDI).  In 2008, STC implemented a new ISO-certified SSHE&Q system that better supports and facilitates the implementation of process enhancements aimed at continuous improvements in both safety and quality.

The sophisticated technologies, processes and practices developed by Stolt Sea Farm have produced an approach to fish farming that is both sustainable and environmentally friendly.  SSF’s fish farms are land based, so that the fish are produced in a completely controlled and contained environment.  This mitigates the risk of both disease and pollution, compared with fish raised in pens in open water.  Sea water used by SSF’s facilities is closely monitored before being returned to the sea.
