This World Environment Day, we look back at twelve months of action across Stolt Tankers, Stolthaven Terminals and Stolt Tank Containers, from cleaner fuels at sea to greener operations on land as we move today’s products for tomorrow’s possibilities.
Stolt Tankers: reducing emissions at sea
- Our Annual Efficiency Ratio (AER) fell 9% to 9.34 from 10.26 in 2024. This metric measures carbon emissions relative to a ship's capacity and distance travelled. Decarbonisation efforts include exploring sustainable fuels, increasing operational efficiency, energy audits, biofouling management and the installation of energy-efficient technology.
- We consumed approximately 4,394 metric tonnes of biofuel, avoiding an estimated 13,604 metric tonnes of CO₂eq emissions, roughly equivalent to the annual heating emissions of around 1,500 European homes. The business also holds its own carbon insets registry, with 45,000 carbon insets available for customers to purchase to offset their Scope 3 emissions (one carbon inset equals 1tCO2eq).
- In April, Stolt Tankers was a partner in India's first green methanol bunkering trial at Deendayal Port, Kandla, alongside J M Baxi. The shore-to-ship trial validated infrastructure, safety systems and operational protocols.
- Stolt Tucan and Stolt Condor completed Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) measurements as part of a wider study into how energy efficiency devices affect the marine ecosystem. The data will support efforts to develop future URN regulations designed to protect marine life.
Stolthaven Terminals: renewable energy and cleaner operations
- Five terminals are now sourcing their electricity entirely from renewable sources. Four of our wholly-owned sites have solar panels installed, including our New Orleans, US terminal where 470 panels were installed in the past year and are expected to generate 200,000 kWh of electricity annually.
- At our Dagenham, UK terminal, all mobile equipment on site now runs on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), a low-carbon alternative to diesel.
- In Houston, US, a steam and condensate rehabilitation programme is under way. The project has the potential to save 50,000 m3 of water per year, equivalent to around 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
- At our Houston terminal, a successful flow battery prototype has been tested in partnership with XL Batteries.
- Through Stolt Ventures, we are investing in French organic flow battery developer Kemiwatt.
Stolt Tank Containers: less waste, reducing operational impact
- We moved 66,799 stainless steel ISO tank containers in 2025. ISO tanks are designed for repeated use over a 20-year lifespan and are 90% recyclable at end of life. This year, when one of our customers switched from single-use flexibags to our ISO tanks, we helped remove the equivalent of 7,500,000 plastic bags or 400,000 kg of plastic from the supply chain.
- At our Zhangjiagang depot in China, the team reduced liquid hazardous waste generation by 70 tonnes. The site was reclassified from an ordinary-level enterprise to a low-level environmental pollution enterprise by the local authority, and received an Honorary Certificate as an Advanced Individual in Environmental Protection.
- We expanded our portfolio to include Zephex® 152a, a propellant used in metered dose inhalers for asthma treatment. This reduces the global warming potential of each inhaler by 90%.
- We continued to ship waste used for recycling or biofuels, which represented 6.5% of our portfolio in 2025, and byproducts used in circular production, at 3.3%.
- We made progress in reducing our operational impact. Rather than diesel, we now power forklifts with biofuel in Moerdijk, the Netherlands and Grangemouth, UK. Two depots source all electricity from renewable sources, our Houston depot procures emissions-free electricity, and our depots in Kandla and Mumbai, India generate their own solar power.
Recognised across all three logistics divisions
Sustainability is not a box we tick once a year. Across our vessels, terminals, and depots, our teams are making practical, measurable changes every day. World Environment Day is an opportunity to reflect on the progress we have made, and the improvements still to come. The progress we are sharing today reflects our commitment and the hard work of our people. It gives us a strong foundation to build on as the expectations in our industry continue to rise."
